Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • orange food coloring
  • purple food coloring
  • green food coloring
  • halloween sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cornstarch in a medium bowl and set aside.
  2. Cream softened butter and sugar in a large bowl using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  3. Mix in egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, then stir in sour cream.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Shape the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour to firm up.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F when ready to bake.
  7. Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut out circles using a 3-inch cookie cutter.
  8. Place cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8-9 minutes until barely golden, ensuring a soft texture.
  9. Allow cookies to cool completely before frosting.
  10. To prepare the buttercream, beat the butter until fluffy, then mix in powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  11. Gradually add milk until obtaining a smooth, spreadable frosting; adjust with more milk if needed.
  12. Divide frosting into 3 bowls, tint each with chosen food coloring.
  13. Frost each cookie with a piping bag or offset spatula and sprinkle with Halloween sprinkles.

Notes

Make sure to chill the dough; it will make cutting and shaping easier.
Experiment with different colors for the frosting to match your Halloween theme.
Store un-frosted cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
